The Floral Hall Built 1934.
In past years, I have been to Belfast Zoo as child and indeed an adult. I’d often seen a building up a steep hill but not far from the enternce. A prominent old boarded up, round pink coloured building. At the time I was unaware of what this building was- or even why this awkward eyesore was here?
Many years later I learned that the Floral Hall was once a venue for dances, concerts and often weddings. Tram loads of people travelled along the Antrim Road to visit the venue.
I’m still learning of this hall’s history and that night a returning tram was hit during WW2 killing all people of religions and none. The all died together that night.
Online campaigners have reported that Pink Floyd and the American ‘Big O’ Roy Orbison were among the stars who had played The Floral Hall.
A Facebook petition stated (I have signed below), “We are appealing for Belfast City Council to seek out all available funding sources and to restore this magnificent Art Deco building for future generations to enjoy”.
