As the iconic Belfast Telegraph prepares to move its printing operations to Newry, it has been revealed that a county Tyrone firm has acquired the premises on Royal Avenue.
McAleer and Rushe are property developers based in Cookstown and are said to be delighted with the acquisition. In a statement Property director Stephen Surlhis said “I am delighted to confirm that McAleer and Rushe have exchanged contracts to acquire the landmark Belfast Telegraph Building on Royal Avenue”.
“We are looking forward to working up proposals for this well-known building, which will enhance our city and give a further boost to our local economy.”
It currently prints the Irish editions of major national newspapers, plus its own titles – which include the Belfast Telegraph, Sunday World and Sunday Life.
Independent News and Media Limited who currently own the Belfast Telegraph announced in August 2015 that the Telegraph would be moving from its city centre offices and putting the property up for sale.
Since news of the sale there has been a frenzy of speculation of who would purchase and occupy the building with the BBC being seen as a front runner for the sight.
